Proactive Bristol Hosts Patient Crafted Care Seminar

Our Bristol clinic recently welcomed case managers, solicitors, barristers and healthcare professionals from across the region for a Patient Crafted Care Seminar, a full day dedicated to collaboration, clinical innovation and the future of prosthetic and orthotic rehabilitation.

The event brought together voices from across the sector, giving delegates the chance to hear directly from clinicians, specialists and rehabilitation experts about the work being done to improve outcomes for patients living with limb loss or requiring orthotic support.

A Full Day of Insight and Discussion

The morning opened with a session on surgical innovations in proactive care, led by Ed Fitzpatrick and Aaron Saini, offering delegates a look at how surgical advances are shaping rehabilitation pathways from the earliest stages of a patient’s journey. Complete with extremely squeamish pictures that were shared too close to breakfast time!

This was followed by a session from Stride Forward’s Holly King and Miriam Westaway, who spoke about patient crafted rehabilitation and the importance of tailoring recovery plans to the individual rather than a one size fits all approach.

Alan McDougall and Natalie Morrow then took to the floor to discuss the role of sport in prosthetics and orthotics, highlighting how physical activity can support both physical recovery and long term wellbeing for patients adjusting to life with a prosthesis or orthotic device.

Hands On Afternoon Workshops

The afternoon session moved into a series of rotating workshops, giving delegates a more practical, close up view of specialist areas within the field. Katy and Mark McIntosh led a session on upper limb prosthetics, Phil Eaglesham presented Conquering Horizons – showcasing his fully adaptable wheelchair, for indoor and outdoor use, designed by actual wheelchair users.

Plus Giles Leeming covered Fior and Gentz orthotics, where advanced orthoses are not available in standard orthotic provision. We also had a fantastic patient in attendance who gave us a great demonstration of his various different arm prosthesis – including a live demo using his prosthetic arm adapted to play the trumpet.

Each workshop gave attendees the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with the specialists behind the work.

Why Events Like This Matter

For our team at Proactive, seminars like this are about more than sharing clinical knowledge. They are an opportunity to strengthen the relationships between clinicians, case managers and legal professionals who all play a part in supporting a patient’s rehabilitation journey. When everyone involved in a case understands the clinical realities and possibilities available, patients benefit from more informed, joined up support.

We were delighted with the turnout and the quality of discussion throughout the day, and we want to thank everyone who attended, as well as every speaker who gave their time and expertise to make the seminar such a success.

This event reflects what Patient Crafted Care means to us: care that is shaped around the individual, built on collaboration between everyone involved, and driven by a genuine commitment to better outcomes.
