Proactive and the London Limb Clinic: expert osseointegration and limb reconstruction

For over 25 years, Proactive Prosthetics & Orthotics has supported people in reclaiming their independence with exceptional prosthetics, orthotics and rehabilitation, shaped by genuine compassion, clinical expertise.  From experience we know that the best outcomes come from the right people working together from the very start, that is why we are proud to be the exclusive rehabilitation partner of the London Limb Clinic (LLC), one of the UK’s leading centres for limb reconstruction, amputation and osseointegration

Who are the London Limb Clinic?

Based at LIPS Healthcare in Battersea Power Station, the LLC specialises in advanced limb reconstruction following trauma, infection and complex surgical complications. It describes itself as the UK’s only true orthoplastic limb reconstruction centre, with surgeons who also work in Major Trauma Centres.

The team brings together:

  • Mr Ed Fitzgerald O’Connor, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon
  • Mr Aaron Saini, Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma and Limb Reconstruction Surgeon
  • Alan McDougall, Prosthetist, Proactive
  • Andrew Reece, Prosthetist, Proactive
  • Sarah Hughes, Physiotherapist, Proactive
  • Helen Saunders, Physiotherapist, Proactive

One team, one plan

Every patient’s journey begins with a multidisciplinary team (MDT) assessment. Surgeons, prosthetists and rehabilitation specialists review the case together, so every part of a person’s care is considered from day one. The result is a clear, tailored plan, whether that involves limb reconstruction, amputation or osseointegration.

Osseointegration is a key specialism, but it is far from the only one. The LLC and Proactive support patients who are:

  • Considering amputation, with planning led by the whole team
  • Needing amputation revision, reshaping and reconstructing the residual limb for better prosthetic fit, comfort and function
  • Living with pain, using advanced nerve procedures such as Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) and RPNI to reduce nerve pain, neuromas, stump pain and phantom sensations
  • Exploring osseointegration, using Integrum OPRA® bone-anchored implants for upper and lower limbs, removing socket interface problems altogether
  • Facing complex reconstruction, including difficult fractures, non-union, bone infection, limb lengthening and deformity correction

Once surgery is complete, Proactive takes the lead on what comes next: tailored rehabilitation, prosthetic fitting, pain management and long-term support.

One LLC patient summed it up well, saying Ed, Aaron and Alan “worked seamlessly together to deliver prosthetic function better than I would otherwise have expected.”

Case study: Jim Ashworth-Beaumont

Few people understand prosthetics from both sides quite like Jim.

An orthotist and prosthetist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Jim spent years helping people adapt to artificial limbs and supports. He is also a trainer and academic, having studied Prosthetics and Orthotics at Strathclyde before completing a Master’s in Neurorehabilitation and a PhD in Health Studies.

In 2020, Jim was struck by a truck while cycling. He lost his right arm and spent six weeks in a medically induced coma.

Ed Fitzgerald O’Connor had been looking for the right patient for this new type of prosthetic attachment. Three years after his accident, Jim underwent osseointegration surgery, with Alan as his prosthetist.

For Jim, the stakes were practical as well as personal:

“I work in clinical and heavy workshop environments, so I need an arm that provides strength, safety, and dexterity.”

His determination, and his commitment to training and physiotherapy, were central to his success. Today, Jim is back doing what he loves: making and fitting orthotic devices for NHS patients.

You can hear more of Jim’s story on BBC Radio 4’s The Life Scientific, where he talks to Jim Al-Khalili about how the experience gave him a new understanding of his patients’ lives, and in this Guardian feature from August 2025.
