The Team at Proactive are immensley proud to have supported the 72 nations of The Commonwealth during the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Nearly 50 members of our team and volunteers came to Birmingham to support the athletes and their coaches. More than anything we were humbled by the commitment and support from the volunteers; prosthetists, orthotists, technicians and games makers who gave their time. The rest of this article is given to sharing their inspiring teamwork and problem solving to support the Commonwealth Games para-athletes in achieving their goals and dreams.

Proactive is a private clinic, established in 2001 by founder Richard Nieveen. Proactive has recently become part of the Ability Matters Group, the largest provider of prosthetics and orthotics in the UK and Ireland, who will provide further investment in the service to facilitate growth, whilst also ensuring that the patient-centred and friendly nature of the service continues to thrive.
At Proactive we are passionate about socket design and hold this in the highest regard when making a prosthesis for our patients and constantly strive to improve results and invest in the latest cutting-edge technology. We have extensive experience with MPK and MPF devices and other advanced upper extremity functional components. Our clinical and technical teams collaborate closely with each other offering peer to peer support. As a company we offer full support with the training needs of our staff and support CPD activities.
We work as part of an MDT led by a consultant in rehabilitation medicine, the team includes Physio, OT, Clinical Psychologist and Exercise Rehab Instructors. We also work as part of a surgical group offering amputation, revision surgery and pain management. Given the nature of our patient referrals we typically work with a patient group of highly motivated individuals aiming to achieve the best levels of outcome. We are also privileged to work with elite Paralympic athletes and will be supporting the Commonwealth Games this year in Birmingham having been successful in our bid to provide Prosthetic and Orthotic support.
Our purpose-built facility enjoys a beautiful riverside setting close to the town centre. We are delighted to be supporting Stef Reid on her exciting journey with
Dancing on Ice!
Preparations are already underway for the competition which is to start on January 2022. Stef has made her first steps onto the ice with her trainer and now that her partner, Andy Buchanan, has been announced she is working him him too.
Initially, we started by making a prosthetic leg that would fit into Stef's skating boot but we have a prototype that is a prosthetic foot attached directly to the skating blade. The really neat thing is that the carbon fibre finish of the socket and foot matches Andy's skating boots. Cute!
It was a privilege for Richard Nieveen to be given official accreditation by British Paralympic Association (BPA) and to be the first prosthetist to be part of Paralympics Team GB for the Tokyo 2020 Games. Paralympic accreditation is a very significant document; it dictates where you can go and what you can do at the Games. Unlike previous Games (London 2012 and Rio 2016) where he travelled independently as personal prosthetist with occasional access to a workshop, in Tokyo I was with the athletes 24/7 as they prepared and competed in their events.
At Proactive we are very proud of the athletes we supported as part of Team GB and the successes they shared with the rest of the Paralympic Team GB.
